Every Friday, we host Ms. Rice's 5th grade class for reading buddies. In this great activity, both 2nd and 5th graders practice their oral reading and social skills. Because there are so many benefits to this weekly practice, I'm so glad that our students have this opportunity.

If your student is getting bored with the books they have, they can log on to MyOn from home. MyOn is a program we use in the classroom, so they should be familiar with it. Please email me if your child can't remember their password. :)
Word study this week is doing different sorts. On Monday, we went over the category, such as the word begins with a c-, ch-, or a j-. If your child comes up with a different set of categories, that is awesome and encourage them to share it with me. :) For the parts of speech sort, having a conversation with them about their words can be extremely beneficial. The word could be used as a noun or a verb, so it may fall into more than one category. I will not be testing them on identifying what part of speech the word is or isn't. Thursday is the day to glue the words down into the original sort categories. If your student loses the words (which should be in their backpack in a ziplock bag), I can send home another copy. Our DonorsChoose.org project can be found here. Please help spread the word to support our classroom needs.
Give to my classroom by September 27, 2014 and your donation will be doubled thanks to DonorsChoose.org. Just enter the code INSPIRE on the payment page and you'll be matched dollar for dollar (up to $100). If you chip in to help my students, you'll get awesome photos and our heartfelt thanks. Here is one of the new clock songs we are using this year as a brain break. It also helps to reinforce learning about telling time. :) Our focus this week is our place on the map. I showed the students this video in class. Their homework for this week is to "map" out their own place. Monday is to make a map of their bedroom and their home. Below is the video if students would like to rewatch it. Here is my Back to School Night presentation for easy reference. I will provide handouts too. :) Looking forward to seeing all my parents. I am hoping the coming school year will be a great one! I am planning on doing weekly updates on here so parents can see their students' hard work in action. :)
